A long update on the little things

I keep meaning to do an update on everyday kid stuff, but then by the time I get through the happenings of the week I just don't have the energy.  So this time I am starting with the kid stuff!

Lukers:

  • When reading a book about a bunny who lost a tooth it spurred a conversation about how kids lose their teeth (including PJ who has already lost teeth).  Luke looked panicked by all of this and said, "I don't want to lose my teeth because I like to eat carrots!
  • Anytime he does something naughty and gets in trouble he simply says "It was an accident, Mommy, accidents happen!"
  • Almost every morning, "Where am I going today?" Then if we don't have plans, or he's bored after playing at home, "Let's go somewhere!"
  • He's starting to be able to write a lot more.  Isolene taught him how to write the letter B by doing two humps and then a straight line.
  • Luke never used to want to sleep with us at home, he would cry and get up if we tried.   He has never been a snuggler.  But for a while lately he was waking up really early and we would bring him into bed with us to sleep for a couple more hours.  It was kind of cozy having him in there - the only time he stays still!  (Claire on the other hand rarely will sleep in bed with us.  When she's up she's up.)
  • He has been really lovey to me lately, too.  Out of nowhere he'll tell me "I love you Mommy" and then if I say I love him back he'll say, "I love you more!" and the back and forth will go on for a while.  He still says "I love you to the police car and back" which started a while ago when I would tell him that I love him to the moon and back, that was his version of a lot:)
  • He has been riding his bike a lot outside, and now he is so good that he puts his helmet on himself and rides around and we don't have to tell him anything.  Quite a concept that our child is doing something he usually doesn't want to because we've taught him that those are the rules!  Let's hope this obedience thing catches on a bit more with him.
  • He is getting a lot better about talking on the phone.  You can have almost a legit conversation on the phone with him now - or at least a few back and forths.  The other day he asked if he could call Grandma and Grandma Baranko and invite them over for dinner, so we dialed for him, he asked them and then told them to come at 6:00!
  • Whenever he watches his shows and something scary or suspenseful is happening he hides so he doesn't have to watch, like Swiper on Dora or other bad guys on screen, he can't take it!  Sometimes he just hides his face in the pillows, and sometimes he goes and hides his whole body behind the couch or in the bathroom until that part is over.
  • Luke was giving Matt positive affirmation the whole time he helped with our new custom closets (which are AWESOME!) and new light fixture installation, "You're a good builder Daddy."
  • He has been setting up couch cushions and random toys all over the family room and then jumps all over them in no particular order, and then proclaims that he made an "obstacle course".  To the untrained eye it looks a lot like a fort OR just a big mess.
  • The other day we were talking about the baby in Auntie Kristin's belly, and he asked "like Baby Claire was in your belly, Mommy?" and I said yes, then I asked him if he liked it better when Claire was in my belly or when she's here with us, and he thought about it and said "I like it better when she's here with us."  I honestly wasn't sure I knew how he would answer that one!

Claire

  • She has been developing quite an attitude - we are concerned about her teenage years if our 15 month old already has such a stubborn, sassy streak.  She has absolutely zero patience for anything that isn't what she wants, exactly when she wants it.  She screams and doesn't stop until she gets what she wants.
  • She without fail wants whatever it is Luke has, whether it is a toy, a beverage, some sort of food, what have you.  Then as soon as we get Luke to finally give it up so we can get a little peace and quiet, she just wants the next thing he picks up.  This is going to be an ongoing battle, I imagine.
  • Claire also has begun to think it is funny to smack you in the face.  She will be super cute and smiley, and then the next instant she's whacked you across the face with her hand, then giggles.  Isolene had to give her a first ever time out for hitting!
  • She's starting to talk a bit more, saying "Momma", "Dada", "da" for dog, and "this, this" pointing at what she wants.  She is really good at communicating what she wants by pointing, saying sounds, and on occasion pushing the person's legs with her hands towards where she wants you to go and then pointing frantically once she leads you there.
  • It is really funny when she's hungry she'll go to her booster seat and reach up for it making noises to indicate she's ready to eat.  She has decided she's too big of a girl for her high chair, and will only sit in the booster seat at the table with the rest of us.
  • She also has been super cute recently in that she will come find you wherever you are, take one of your fingers in a tight grip, and then lead you to where she wants you to go - whether that's playing with toys or coming to see something she's working on.
  • Although Claire has been sleeping through the night now for a few months - after a good stretch there of having to wake up in the middle of the night, walk her around, and put her back to bed - but unfortunately her wake up times have been brutal lately.  I don't know if it is teething (she just got 2 more teeth on the bottom, so she's up to 6 teeth!) or what, but she has been regularly waking up between 4:30-5:30am.  Matt and I have been switching off getting up with her, but it is not fun.  Two times now we've actually had to drive her around in the car she's been so fussy - we never even did that ever with either of our kids the whole time they were infants.  The sunrise over Lake Michigan is quite beautiful, we both can attest to that now having seen it during our hour long drives around town.
  • Luke doesn't wake up until 7:30 usually, she is up for hours without him.  If you don't watch her like a hawk, she'll speed down the hallway to burst into Luke's room to wake him up by shrieking in his face and trying to crawl up on his bed.  He is so funny, he'll be like "Claire-Bear….I'm still sleeping!"
  • She LOVES the itsy bitsy spider song and will do all the hand movements.  She will tell you she wants you to sing that song by making the hand movements.  She also does the finger over the lips "ShhhShhhShh" part of the Wheels on the Bus song, instead of the more traditional wheels part.
  • She loves her babies.  She hugs them tight and pats their backs, it is the cutest thing ever,
  • Claire is really into her belly button.  She'll walk around lifting up her shirt or dress showing everyone it.  Matt showed her that her doll had a belly button, too, and she was geeking out about it.
  • If asked she can find her nose, too, although she usually sticks her finger up her nose to identify its placement.  She can sometimes find her eyes, ears and mouth too, but often guesses wrong.
  • She is a dancing fool!  She rocks and sways and stomps her feet and claps her hands whenever there is music on.  Adorable!
  • She blows kisses on command - muah!
